Turk, Otis L. Graveside funeral services will be held Monday, July 28 at 10 A.M. at South Kern Cemetery, Arvin for Otis Leroy Turk, 93 of Shafter who passed away July 18. Dalan Brokaw will officiate and interment will follow.
Otis was born December 4, 1931 in Bell Center, Wisconsin. In his early years, he grew and attended school in the small village of Soldiers Grove. He came to California as a teenager with his family and they settled in Bakersfield and Otis graduated from Taft High School where he played football. He married Mavis Bramwell in 1951 and they stared their life together. Otis worked and many jobs in his lifetime, from working in a mine to owning and operating the “As Is” store in Bakersfield where he did some restoration of furniture and antiques that came through the store. At 80 something, he last worked for an oil company in Texas. He also loved working on old cars and collected brass and old coins.
Otis loved the Lord and was very involved in the church over the years. He and Mavis attended First Jesus Name Church in Weedpatch for many, many years and were a part of the Christian School there. He even served in the capacity of principal/administrator at the school for a few years. After the death of his wife Mavis, he began attending Truth Tabernacle Church in Bakersfield and there met Gwen Brokaw who had lost her husband some years before. They married after some time and made their home in Bakersfield until moving to Texas where they lived for over 20 years, before returning to California to be near family due to health reasons.
Otis was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Mavis Turk; a great grandson Daniel Zuniga; a sister Loretta Copus and a brother Robert Turk.
He is survived by his wife Gwen Turk of Visalia; his daughter Kathy Lutz (Larry) of Shafter; sons David Turk of Shafter and Craig Turk (Betty) of Bakersfield; his beloved sons Dalan Brokaw ( Paula) of Visalia, Jerome Brokaw (Terri) of Texas and Stan Brokaw (Tawnia) of Visalia as well as 14 grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and a host of friends.
