Ellen Laverne Myers
September 16, 1935 -June 20, 2025
Laverne was born in De Queen, Arkansas on September 16, 1935, to Lillard & Jessie House. She attended school there until the family moved to Lindsay in 1947, continuing her education, and graduating from Lindsay High School in 1952. During the summer breaks of high school, several families from Lindsay would follow the seasonal fruits up the state of California, and into Oregon and Washington, she would babysit the families kids, since she was too young to work in the fields, and then return to Lindsay the first part of September, just in time to start school. Laverne attended Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas for one year and returned home. Her first public job was at the Lindsay Theatre in the Box Office, until she found full-time employment in 1955, at the Bank of America until 1963. While working at the bank, a tall handsome guy named Edward would come into cash and deposit his paycheck, yes, that is where it began in the fall of 1960. After several months of courting, he popped the question, and she said yes!! They packed up the car, headed to Las Vegas, Nevada, and were married on July 1, 1961. (This July 1st would have made 64 wonderful years together). Setting down roots, Laverne continued working at the Bank of America until 1964. From then on, she was the “boss”, head chief and bottle washer on the acquired family poultry ranch. There she raised 3 children, participating in Brownies, Girls Scouts, 4H, FFA and High School sports, keeping her busy running them around through the years. While attending the Hermosa St Church of Christ in Lindsay, she loved to sing, enjoyed visiting the area Sunday night singings hosted by the Church of Christs in Tulare and Kings Counties, taught Sunday school, Attendance Clerk and Bulletin Editor. Laverne loved to travel, many times with her sister Betty, sister-in-law Thelma, and Cousin Wilma. They would load the car and travel through Laughlin, Nevada to get to Lubbock, Texas, then on to their hometown of De Queen, Arkansas to visit with family, weeks on end. As the years of retirement set upon her, day trips to the coast, casino or Three Rivers to the candy store filled her days. Laverne was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Larry, Roy, & Gene House, sister Betty Williamson and great granddaughter Athena Jessie Myers. Still here on earth and missing her terribly is her husband Edward, daughters; Jolena (Joe) Cristan, Gayle (John) Southerland and son Lewis (Traci) Myers. Grandchildren; Michael (Emily) Hager, Brittney (Jarrad) Deaver, Emily (Jason) McNally, Ethan Myers and fiancé Cynthia Martin, Jahni Newhauser and fiancé Kaitlin Cox. Great Grandchildren; Luke & Elijah Deaver and Amelia & Ellie Jo Hager, 4 nephews, 2 nieces, and a large handful of great nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family has chosen Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera for any contributions. The viewing will be held at the Webb-Sanders-Smith Funeral Home on Sunday, June 29th from 3pm to 5 pm. Graveside services will be held at the Lindsay-Strathmore Cemetery at 10am on June 30th, 2025, with a reception following at the Exeter Womans Club.
