Anne Haas, 95, passed away peacefully in her sleep on June 15, 2024. She was born in June 1929 in San Francisco, California, the daughter of John and Mary Toomey. Her family and friends were blessed to have celebrated her 95th birthday with her. Anne graduated from St. Paul’s High School in San Francisco in 1947. She attended St. Mary’s Hospital School of Nursing where she received her RN license. She remained active in the alumni association of both schools and had frequent reunions with her nursing school friends. She met Alfred Haas when he came to visit his brother, Hank, who was attending UC Berkeley. They were married in 1953 and made their first home in Simi Valley. The family moved to Lindsay in the spring of 1965 and the couple lived on Citrus Avenue for 57 years, until Alfred’s death. Anne then moved to Sierra Hills in Porterville. Besides taking care of a home and six children, Anne spent many years volunteering with Lindsay 4-H and Sacred Heart Church. She returned to work as a nurse in the early 1970’s, and spent many years at Sierra View in Porterville. She fell in love with quilting and was a member of Porterville Quilters and the Valley Oaks Quilt Guild in Tulare. She made quilts for all occasions, especially births and weddings. Anne was still actively working with the Porterville Quilters Little Quilts project at her death. The group makes small quilts that are put in police cars and given to children in crisis. She spent many enjoyable afternoons playing cards and Rummikub with her friends and family. She never turned down an invitation to a party of any kind, and always had an interesting story. Anne is survived by her children: Mary Clark and husband, Tim; Rick and wife, Kathy; Terri Zielinski and husband, Mark; Janet Smagala and husband, John; David and fiancee, Mimi; Matthew and wife, Lisa. Anne leaves her grandchildren Brian Clark and wife, Autumn; Patrick Clark and wife Melissa, Dennis Haas, Scott Haas, Michael Zielinski, Andrew Smagala, Alex Smagala, Luke Smagala, David Haas and wife Cristina; Karissa Rios and husband Bryan; Alexis Haas, Josie Haas, Kate McCarty and Parker McCarty. She also had nine great-grandchildren: Lakona Silva, Kolton Clark, Sophia Clark, Macy Clark, Sonny Smagala, Kaitlyn Rios, Molly Rios, Siobhan Haas and Sean Haas. Anne also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, cousins, and cherished friends. She had a special place in her heart for all of her relatives and friends, and at 95 remembered details about every one of them. We will all miss the cards she sent to each of us on our birthdays, and every holiday, big and small. Services will be on November 6 at Sacred Heart Church in Lindsay. Alfred and Anne will be interred at the Bakersfield National Cemetery on November 7, on what would have been their 71st wedding anniversary. The family would like to thank the staff at Sierra Hills for their care, and extend a special thank you to her caregivers, Jackie and Audi. If you would like to honor Anne, donations can be made to your favorite charity or her favorite charity, Little Quilts. Checks can be made out to Porterville Quilters with a notation that they are for Little Quilts and sent to Terry Gomez, 19701 Road 212, Strathmore, CA 93267.
