A Memorial Celebration of Life service will be held on Thursday, August 22, at 1 P.M. at the Lindsay Church of the Nazarene for Joe Mohnike, 72 of Visalia who passed away August 8. Pastor Rachel Smith will officiate. A reception will follow. As a veteran, Joe will be interred with military honors at Bakersfield National Cemetery on Friday, August 23.
Joe, as he was known, was born September 25, 1946 in Visalia and was raised in Visalia and in Lindsay, attending local schools and graduating from Redwood High School with the Class of 1964. He served his country in the United States Army as a Military Policemen in the post Vietnam era helping to keep and maintain order. Joe worked for several years as a Loan Officer for various banks and finance companies including Pacific Finance and Household Finance Company before starting his own insurance agency, Fair Oaks Insurance Agency in Lindsay in 1973. Joe was a hard working man, and was known as ‘Mr. Fix-it”. He loved helping family and friends alike and has literally given the shirt from off his back to help someone in need. Joe will be remembered as being very passionate about wood working. He loved cabinetry, carving and lathe turning and over the years, has made so many beautiful pieces in his shop. He also loved talking about Egyptian history and World War II history and was knowledgeable about both subjects. He loved music, especially Opera, Jazz and Bossa nova, which is a style of Brazilian music. He was also a self taught mechanic, could weld and was an avid collector of vintage tools especially old wood planes. Joe was preceded in death by all of his siblings.
Left to cherish his memory are his children Charles Mohnike and wife Edmeé of Chico and Donna Kay Metheney and husband Brian of Exeter; his grandchildren Megan Gibson Thornton and Ryan Gibson as well as one great grandson Rylan Gibson, all of Nebraska; Best friend Joan Lantrip Hartwell and Mandy Hartwell Goleman who was like a daughter to him as well as many other friends over the years.
